10 Movies Like the Last Song
Released in 2010, the Last Song is a coming-of-age movie that is based off of the novel by Nicholas Sparks. In the movie, we see a classic teenage romance that stars Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth. The movie takes place in a sleepy southern town as troubled Miley Cyrus reconnects with her father and falls in love. When it comes to love stories, the Time Traveler’s Wife is sure to please. Like the Last Song, this movie is based off of a book by the first-time novelist, Audrey Niffenegger. When Niffenegger first tried to publish this novel, she was turned down by a number of literary agents. Finally, she sent it off to MacADam/Cage and her book ended up getting auctioned to the highest buyer. The story line is focused on a couple that has to deal with a man who has a genetic disorder which causes him to travel through time. She has to deal with his absences and learn how to cope with his disappearances. Due to this interesting story line and the love story behind it, the movie and book were both highly successful.
Silver Linings Playbook
Released in 2012, Silver Linings Playbook was one of the best films made in the entire year. It stars Bradley Cooper as Patrick Solatano and Jennifer Lawrence as Tiffany Maxwell. Bradley has just been released from a mental hospital because he had a breakdown after catching his wife with another man. As he traverses the way back to sanity, he becomes friends with Tiffany and they start to help each other recover from their demons. If you want to see the heart-warming ending, you should watch the movie—I do not want to ruin it for you.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Like many of the films on this list, the Perks of Being a Wallflower was based off of a book with the same name. A decade after the book was published, the movie was released in 2012. It starred the inestimable Emma Watson, Logan Lerman and Ezra Miller. Basically, this movie is another coming-of-age story that is told from the perspective of the slightly odd, but lovable Charlie.
Produced in 2010, Blue Valentine is an excellent example of an American romantic film. It was directed by Derek Cianfrance and stars Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling. In essence, the movie follows the lives of a married couple named Dean and Cindy. It moves back and forth in time to show the couples entire relationship. By the end of the film, you will have seen the entire courtship, marriage and the end of their marriage. Although there are certainly some intense dramatic moments in it, Blue Valentine is definitely worth watching. If you liked the Last Song, you will enjoy seeing this romantic movie.
Love and Other Drugs
If you were looking for a romantic comedy, Love & Other Drugs is sure to please. Released in 2010, this movie contains actors like the lovely Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal. In the movie, Jamie Randall (Jake Gyllenhaal) ends up getting fired from his job because he slept with the girlfriend of his manager. Fortunately, Jamie’s brother gets him a job at Pfizer . As soon as Jamie ends up in the training program, he has another affair with the instructor. As he starts going on his rounds, he meets the beautiful Maggie (Anne Hathaway) and immediately falls for her. What ensures is a romantic comedy that is simultaneously touching, hilarious and heart-warming.
Water for Elephants
Water for Elephants has a great story line, but it is worth watching just for the images. The movie is beautifully filmed and stars Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson. Produced in 2011, the film begins with an old man bumping into the owner of a small circus. This beginning takes place in the present day, but the majority of the film is actually a flash back to the times of the Great Depression. Back then, a young vet student called Jacob unintentionally joins the circus. At times ethereal and always breath-taking, this movie has a romance story for the ages.
Produced in 2004, If Only stars Paul Nicchols and Kennifer Love Hewitt. In the movie, an English businessman called Ian is living with his American girlfriend, Samantha, in London. After a busy day at work, Ian hops in a taxi to go see Samantha’s music concert. At their dinner afterward, Sam is upset with Ian because she just wants him to love her. She runs away from the restaurant and into a taxi that is strangely driven by the exact same taxi driver. The taxi is hit by a car, and Sam ends up dying. When Ian returns from the hospital and falls asleep, he wakes up to have all of the same events happen over again. Sam is alive and he is reliving the last day of her life again. This movie is touching, but it is certainly a tear jerker. You should only watch it if you plan on crying.
For a high school romance, check out Crazy/Beautiful. In the movie, you get to watch things play out between a spoiled rich girl and a Mexican-American honor roll student. Despite their differences, the two meet on a beach and begin to fall in love. Crazy/Beautiful may not make the list of the best films of the 21st century, but it is still an excellent romantic drama.
The Spectacular Now
Unusually titled, the Spectacular Now is a comedy film that features a cute love story. It shows the story of a young man called Sutter who is quickly becoming an alcoholic. His girlfriend breaks up with him because of his alcoholism and he ends up passing out from drink on someone’s lawn. When he wakes up, he discovers Aimee Finicky. She is an manga-loving, makeup-hating girl, and he quickly starts to fall for her.
For a fantastical escape from reality, Tuck Everlasting is the movie to choose. Winnie Foster is ten years old and wants to run away from home. She ends up meeting a 17 year old boy by the spring. His family member’s explain that the spring is magical and gives eternal life. What follows is a surreal, unusual story with a plot line that is never what you expect it to be. If you enjoyed watching the Last Song, you are sure to enjoy Tuck Everlasting.
