What Does it Mean When a Guy Calls You Mami?

By on December 22, 2016

It’s not everyday you’ll hear a guy call you a word like ‘mami’, but it does happen once in awhile. Not everyone is very well acquainted with the term as it’s coined from an entirely different language. When you hear it you may think to yourself how similar to mommy it sounds… This may weird some people out. But, don’t worry, mami isn’t as bad as it sounds. No, he’s not calling you mom, so just take a breath and relax. We’re here to tell you what he’s really trying to say to you.

Mami originates from the Spanish language. Although mami was originally meant to define a mother, it has now been turned into a slang term that’s commonly used. Mami is essentially him calling you sexy, honey or baby. It’s a spicier pet name that’s usually used on a girl that a man has an attraction for or is in some sort of relationship with. You may also often hear mamacita or ma, which are just different variations of mami. Trust us, it’s a complement and there’s no need to worry. He’s not looking to call you his mother, he’s just trying to tell you he thinks you’re sexy.

Now they call her girlfriend “mami” and their boyfriend “daddy”.
This USA slang words vocabulary is getting ridiculous beyond any possible imagination thanks to people who have nothing better to do over than make slang words and the other ones that repeat them like parrots. What next, they will use “mom” and “dad” words to describe something else and desecrate every f*ing regular and solemn thing in this world?! There is a limit to everything.

I get where you’re coming from. “Daddy” always seemed really weird to me. “Mami” isn’t actually from the USA–it was brought here because of the many Spanish-speaking immigrants who came to the country. Thanks for commenting!

Should I be concerned if I found a message between my boyfriend and another girl and he called her “mami”? He tried telling me that it’s just a “friendly” term in Spanish (I’m American and he’s Dominican). Thoughts?

It is possible that he is telling you the truth about the term that he is using for this person. He may view her as a friend. He may be interested in nourishing this relationship. Make a decision about what you feel is appropriate for the future of this relationship. Speak with him about your thoughts and feelings, and give him an opportunity to share himself with you as well. It is certain that your relationship will be benefited by boundaries and a discussion about what is appropriate. Have a great day, DMS!

What does it mean if he says it in a non-chalant way? For example, this guy that I have mutual friends with (don’t know him very well) said “hope you enjoy your dinner mami” as I was leaving a friend gathering to grab dinner. Is that being flirtatious or casual?

His behaviors may be flirtatious or casual. If this is a new behavior, then he likely is flirting with you. Make a decision about what you want for the future of this relationship. Speak with him about your thoughts and feelings. Give him an opportunity to share himself with you as well. Nourish this relationship by spending additional time with him in person. Have a great day, M!
