BB creams, which were first created and have been overwhelmingly popular in Asia for years, only crept into the US market a few years ago. But they became instantly popular. BB stands for “Beauty Balm,” “Blemish Balm,” or “Blemish Base.” The creams serve as multi-functional face fixers—moisturizing, priming, treating problem spots, protecting against sun damage, smoothing out texture and infusing skin with anti-oxidants and vitamins. The truth is, it may not be. You have to be careful when shopping for organic beauty items. The American cosmetics industry is currently not regulated by the FDA, so brands can make all kinds of deceptive claims about their products, including using that incredibly vague and ultimately meaningless word “all-natural.”

But there are tricks for determining shade. If you are in a department store or a Sephora, where they let you try on your potential purchases, select three shades that seem right you, swipe them across your jawbone and lower cheek, get as close to natural light as possible, and examine your trio of smudges in a mirror. One myth that must be busted immediately: Just because your skin is acne-prone, and therefore probably produces excess oil, does NOT mean that you can forgo using a moisturizer. It may seem counterintuitive, but oily skin needs hydration just as much as normal and dry skin does. Why? If you don’t moisturize on a regular basis, your skin becomes confused and think it’s lacking in hydration. It will therefore produce more slick sebum (i.e. oil) to make up for what it’s not getting from a moisturizer. So in the end, your skin actually ends up producing more oil, making your face a major shine-fest.
