10 Best Deodorants for Women
We all need deodorant. Some more than others. We also all have different needs in terms of what we need in a deodorant. If you tend to perspire a lot, you’ll definitely want to make sure you use an antiperspirant (‘natch). However some people tend to sweat less but still emit offensive odors, in which case a simple solid deodorant might be all they need to get rid of that embarrassing smell.
It really depends on your own special sweat glands, however it’s usually safest to use a formula that’s contains both antiperspirant and deodorant properties. To that end, we’ve rounded up 10 of the best underarm scent and sweat-savers, all of which are formulated especially for women.
Next to a prescription formula, Secret’s Clinical Strength Antiperspirant and Deodorant is probably the best over-the-counter product for women who suffer from serious sweat and odor. It comes in a wide variety of strengths and scents, including Clinical Strength Light and Fresh (pictured), Clinical Strength Soothing and Clinical Strength Stress Response. You can even take this test to find out which one might be right for you.
This antiperspirant and deodorant is motion-activated, meaning that it kicks into high gear when it senses that your body is in serious need for some sweat and odor protection. It comes in in five clean, fresh scents, including Active Clean (pictured), which contains a light fragrance of jasmine and rose, Fresh Energy, which is infused with lily of the valley and tiare flower, and Linen Dry, which has a sweet, citrusy scent.
For those of us that grew up in the 70s and 80s, you might remember Mitchum’s memorable catchphrase: “So effective you can skip a day.” That was when the brand was marketed primarily for men, and I remember that smell (both my dad AND my momused it and it was so….overly deodorant-y). But Mitchum has come a long way since those early days, and now this roll-on, formulated especially for women, still retains the powerful, 48-hour protection of the original formula without the overblown smell. There’s also a Power Gel, Smart Solid Clinical Performance and an Advanced Control Solid, if you’re not the roll-on type.
If you’re an organic gal, Jason’s Deodorant might just be the one for you. Made with zinc picinoleate (which is a purified fatty acid), corn starch and baking soda, it neutralizes odor naturally. It also contains grapefruit seed extract, which helps fight odor caused by bacteria. Lavender and vitamin E are also in the mix, and they work to soothe and soften your underarm skin, which is especially helpful right after you shave. But remember that this is a deodorant only, so while it’s incredibly effective for fighting stinky pits, it won’t do anything for sweat stains.
Unlike some other gel formulas we’ve tried, Almay’s is not irritating, doesn’t sting, and isn’t too gluey or sticky. It’s hypoallergenic, so it’s a great choice for those with super sensitive pits, plus it contains essential elements like cocoa butter and natural botanicals to give it a sweet scent and enhance its soothing formula.
Vitamins E and F, as well as ¼ moisturizing cream, is what makes Dove’s Go Sleeveless Antiperspirant Deodorant formula so incredibly soft and gentle. For those of you who have especially sensitive underarms, this is the product for you, as it’s created to calm and soothe skin after shaving, and with continued use, it will improve the easily-irritated state of your underarms, in as little as five days. So you can finally go sleeveless without any worry.
This invisible solid really is invisible, unlike some others we’ve tried that still manage to leave white marks on the sides of our shirts. It protects against both odor and wetness for a full 24 hours, and the subtle passion-flower/vanilla scent combo is really quite lovely and very non-deodorant-y.
Yes, it’s pretty much insanely pricey for a deodorant, but anyone familiar with Dr. Hauschka’s products will understand why it’s worth it. The natural, non-irritating formula is made with witch hazel and sage extracts, which absorb odor without clogging pores. And that means no unsightly underarm bumps. It’s not an antiperspirant, so it’s definitely not ideal for heavy sweaters. However if odor is your concern, this is a luxe—yet highly effective—choice. Plus, the natural citrus scent, made from pure essential oils, is irresistible.
Another high-end sweat and odor eater, Kiehl’s formula is simple and effective. It uses orange, lemon, and linseed extracts to make underarm hair softer which results in a smoother shave. It’s also fragrance free, but provides ample 24–hour protection against sweat and odor.
Rock on without worry with this effective roll-on from Kiss My Face. It’s another great options for all-natural product lovers: it’s naturally scented, uses a liquid mineral crystal formula, and contains ingredients such as willow bark extract and lavender oil. It’s not made to stop sweat, but it neutralizes odor like a rock star.
